Whitechapel Market
Whitechapel, one of the UK’s poorest and most diverse inner-city neighbourhoods, is undergoing several multi-million pound redevelopments. A new railway station, hospital, town hall, hotels and dozens of apartment and office blocks will leave this vibrant and historically-important neighbourhood forever changed. At the heart of this change is the centuries-old Whitechapel Market, beloved by local residents for its unique wares and bargain-basement prices. The market area is not without its troubles, however, with homelessness, drug abuse and theft at an all-time high. Focussing on the market, I’ve been documenting this remarkable period in Whitechapel’s history.
I’m delighted to be supported on this long-term project by the London Borough of Tower Hamlets.
